Help Us Warm Up Parkland Babies

Parkland Memorial Hospital, located in Dallas, TX, serves as Dallas County's public hospital, serving many communities and delivering thousands of babies every year. In the past, Warm Up America (WUA) donated boxes of baby caps to Parkland, which were greatly appreciated. This year, the Child Life Specialist staff have another wish: they want to wrap every baby born at Parkland in a beautiful crocheted or knitted blanket. After visiting with the families of newborns at the hospital and seeing how appreciative the mothers were of our handmade gifts, this is a challenge we could not refuse, but we cannot accomplish our goal without your help.

Because of this special request and to provide as many baby blankets as quickly as possible, we are asking volunteers to contribute finished baby blankets, instead of the usual individual 7” by 9” sections. That doesn’t mean you still can’t work with friends and complete individual sections. We simply ask that you join the individual sections into a finish baby blanket and then send them to WUA.

If you prefer knitting or crocheting the traditional 7” by 9” WUA section, the ideal size blanket would be 35” by 45”. You’d make 25 sections: 5 sections across and 5 down). We also have two baby blanket project ideas, one with adorable accessories, which you might consider. Both incorporate smaller crocheted and knitted blocks, especially attractive for newborns. They will be available at the web site shortly so stop back soon.

If you are able to complete an entire baby blanket, then you can use any pattern. (Parkland nurses suggested that one size might be 40"x40" but anything in that size range would be terrific.) However you wish to work, remember to use yarn that is washable and dryable. (NOTE: Warm Up America! is only accepting crocheted and knitted afghans.)

Parkland also welcomes knitted or crocheted blankets, scarves and hats in all sizes for adult patients as well.

In the coming weeks, we’ll also be featuring additional baby afghan patterns for inspiration at Warm Up America’s Facebook page. We also invite you to share a photo of your finished afghan(s) on the Warm Up America page as well.

Can we count on you?
